Newgulf (or New Gulf) is an unincorporated community in Wharton County, Texas. Founded as a company town in 1919 for Texas Gulf Sulfur Company, it once boasted a population of over 1,500. Seen here are the massive twin smokestacks, approximately 300' high, and building shells from the sulphur mine, which provide a glimpse of the town's history. Production ceased in 1993 and the site began being dismantled.
Recently, one of the largest buildings is under repair and various areas are in use. New fencing has been erected. Many original buildings, or their remnants are very present.
